The last time it almost ended badly: Paul Sperry, a passionate American sailor, ended up overboard while sailing on Long Island Sound after slipping from the wet deck of his family's boat.
So in 1935, just a few years after the accident, while walking his cocker spaniel Prince through the snowy streets of New Haven, Connecticut, he had an extraordinary intuition: the paws did not sink into the snow and ice but moved forward quickly, making a “grip”!
Thus, boat shoes were born, a brown leather moccasin with a white rubber sole (designed not to leave marks), with a herringbone engraving.
And it was such a remarkable invention that they were adopted by the United States Navy as early as World War II.
